That is actually hilarious, I thought of COVID right away, but also... really smart. Couldn't be a more perfect time for a random site event.
It really makes me think of the events that go on right now as a basis. But they could be completely random and infect players, or whatever might be interesting. A meteor hit and released aliens to kill in a temporary map (I wonder if it's possible for you to completely randomise a map layout for things like that?). Or say an infectious alien came to our planet. We're all debuffed until we defeat that global boss enough times, like the global health system we have already on raids/npc. Which would in turn reward players/guilds through their total and personal contribution.
So yeah in general, I suppose if the buff and debuff system was worked on more, it opens more options like that. I actually love it.

While I agree that’s a fun idea, I feel it might be best to stay away from anything regarding any sort of infection. Might be seen as making light of the current situation and all those that have died from it.

I think either way, it'd be an interesting dynamic to have something negative that you are afflicted with by doing something questionable. Maybe you want to get a rare item, so you go into a tomb and risk getting cursed, like the curse of Tutankhamun ("Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the King").

And for a while after you complete the quest, you're diseased/cursed, and it can spread to others. It's like a pro and a con for the person that has it (smiley)

I think we're more than safe to do things like that. Negative buffs for risky actions, etc. We don't need to lay it on thick with the real world references though. I come here to escape reality (smiley) The original idea is from at least 2017 so it's officially unrelated to present day anyway.

Edit: Maybe you could be radioactive after opening a reactor to steal an experimental device to weaponise, and you irradiate people who come into contact with you, or you cause burns.

Actually, that makes me think, maybe /items/ themselves could have such effects as a % chance. You hit someone with an ice sword, you have x% chance of freezing someone (i.e. casting negative buff for a while).

Elemental/Effect weapons! That's a nice one. Either items with such effects, or something to apply those effects to your items. Also has me thinking that there isn't a regeneration/lifesteal effect to combat. Whether you heal between turns, or heal by a % of your damage done. This could be a stat/effect to look into I feel.
Side note, I wasn't necessarily making COVID a laughing matter, it was just similar and it was funny that I had also thought of it. Sometimes light of a situation isn't a bad thing. Especially one that everyone can relate to right now. Which causes it to be quite unavoidable to mention at times. But I do apologize, and it is a good point that it's an escape here.

I don't think anyone thought you were (smiley) It's a good mechanic, we should definitely take advantage of it in some way.

And yeah, we're getting health/bioenergy back too (smiley) Actually, I seem to have put it on this 2 week roadmap...
"Design and implement a "health/bioenergy" mechanic for players, to allow attacking to have lasting effects"

Adding mechanic is easy enough, it's hanging things off of that mechanic that takes the thinking. You can have consumable food/potions to replenish your health, resting might restore it to a certain %, attribs to raise the max health, etc.

Should be interesting. My current idea is that lower health will reduce your attack/hp/speed by some %, because you're injured. The idea being, you have to keep yourself in good shape.

We could also have stuff that you can't do if you're in poor health. Maybe you can't raid if you're mortally wounded. We should probably put this in a new thread for discussion, actually.

Yeah, this. It's probably a bit risque to do something related to an infection but you could have so many similar situations. I personally like the global boss idea that Symph suggested. It'd be nice to have an event every so often where the entire game has to work together to defeat a common enemy. Lots of games do that sort of thing now where the rewards are better based on more people taking part. 10,000 global kills gets you a buff, but if we get to higher milestones, the rewards grow. That'd be brilliant!

Yeah there were a few games I played on Kongregate that had raid bosses that were defeated and fought by everyone in the game, with a limit to the amount of people who could join in. Then also guild only bosses. But they'd have events for a boss with no player limit, and you just beat it up. Reaching a certain damage thresholds got you rewards when the event ended. One of my favorite games on there ever was a card based one, forgot the name. They stopped development on it, but god damn was it good. It used this raid system though as well. Bosses would have a debuff limit, and you'd plan what debuffs went on it. For example if it was a dragon, you'd use a debuff to increase dragon damage, while also giving a random chance to inflict 300% more damage, etc. Letting the person with the best version of that skill do it.
(Side note, my italics are starting to bug me, so I might stop that lol.)
