I've seen some games that if you were to lose an item like this then you could go back to the npc that you first got it from and after berating you for losing it they would go ahead and give you another one. Would that be possible?

My understanding is that those quests are just to upgrade the items if you're still using them. So maybe you just can't do that quest if you destroy it.I agree with you, that it would be nice to get it back, but at the same time, I can understand not wanting to have every item on a vendor for unlimited supply.
My vote would be for the original NPC giving you another item, but maybe you still have to pay for it. The other question is what are the chances that a low level player would have destroyed it. I'd have to play through all of the quests again to see what items the lowbie would be equipping at each time to be sure.

I haven't the time to read through all these posts, but just want to say the map is beyond great. The quests are great, and so far no problems. Amount of money it takes to buy things could probably be a bit lower I guess, not really sure because I'm not really attacking everything. But compared to the credits you get back, it doesn't seem to balanced.
